Sulphur project reducing environmental impact

One of Nornickel's key initiatives to significantly improve the company’s environmental performance is its Sulphur Project. This large environmental endeavour aims to cut sulphur dioxide emissions by 90% in five years.

The Sulphur Programme - Kola Division

As part of the Sulphur Project – the Sulphur Programme (Kola Division), has significantly reduced the adverse environmental impact in Monchegorsk and eliminated sulphur dioxide emissions in the Russia-Norway border area affected by Kola MMC.

This was made possible through the closure of an obsolete production shop in the town of Nikel and downstream copper modernisation in Monchegorsk.

Closing the smelting shop will reduce sulphur dioxide emissions in Monchegorsk to less than 30 ktpa in 2021, and with the shutdown of the smelting shop in the town of Nikel, the emissions in Kola Peninsula in 2021 will be 85% lower compared to 2015.

The new facility in Monchegorsk will will use roasting-leaching-electroextraction technology, observing the highest environmental standards with superiror levels of mechanisation and automation.

The Sulphur Programme - Polar Division

The Sulphur Programme (Polar Division), designed to capture sulphur dioxide emissions, will be phased in at Nornickel’s two core downstream facilities in the Norilsk Industrial District – the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant and Copper Plant, with both phases of the Programme set to be completed by 2025.

The new processing facilities will convert the sulphur dioxide produced during the metal smelting process into gypsum using locally sourced limestone, turning a harmful gas into a safe product. In five years, Nornickel will be able to cut sulphur dioxide emissions in Norilsk by 90%.
